Janmashtami 2026 in the Netherlands
Also called Krishna Janmashtami, Gokulashtami, जन्माष्टमी.
This date has passed. The next one is Janmashtami 2027, on Wednesday, 25 August 2027.
Janmashtami is marked with a fast that breaks at midnight, when Krishna is said to have been born. Families set up a small cradle, bathe the idol, and eat after the aarti.
Midnight is the practical issue in the Netherlands — it is a working week, the children have school, and the temples that hold a midnight aarti are not always close. Many families here move the aarti earlier and keep everything else. Nobody minds.
What we arrange
- Jhula and the dressing for it, sourced rather than improvised
- Panchamrit and the fasting food for the day
- Makhan mishri and the fifty-six bhog if you keep it
- A pandit for the midnight aarti, or an earlier one
- Dahi handi for a group, if there are enough children for it
What this usually becomes
Also this year
- Karva Chauth 2026Thursday, 29 October 2026 — A day-long fast that ends when the moon is sighted — which in November here is not guaranteed.
- Dhanteras 2026Friday, 6 November 2026 — The day you buy metal. Two days before Diwali, and the start of the five days.
- Diwali 2026Sunday, 8 November 2026 — Five days, one main night, and Dutch fireworks law that catches everyone out the first year.
- Places we can arrange thisWhere a puja, a dinner or a photoshoot actually works, with the practical detail that decides it.
