Janmashtami in the Netherlands

Also called Krishna Janmashtami, Gokulashtami, जन्माष्टमी.

Janmashtami is marked with a fast that breaks at midnight, when Krishna is said to have been born. Families set up a small cradle, bathe the idol, and eat after the aarti.

Midnight is the practical issue in the Netherlands — it is a working week, the children have school, and the temples that hold a midnight aarti are not always close. Many families here move the aarti earlier and keep everything else. Nobody minds.

What we arrange

  • Jhula and the dressing for it, sourced rather than improvised
  • Panchamrit and the fasting food for the day
  • Makhan mishri and the fifty-six bhog if you keep it
  • A pandit for the midnight aarti, or an earlier one
  • Dahi handi for a group, if there are enough children for it

Sourcing takes about 14 days for this one, so tell us by .
