Chhath Puja in the Netherlands
(expected)
Also called Surya Shashthi, छठ पूजा.
One source gives 15 November for the main Sandhya Arghya day. Confirm the four-day range before planning.
Chhath is the hardest festival on this list to keep properly in the Netherlands, and the one families are most determined not to drop. It runs four days and turns on standing in water to offer arghya to the setting sun and then the rising one.
Mid-November here means water around eight degrees and a sunrise after half past seven. Families use the Amstel, the Sloterplas, or a shallow stretch where the bank is walkable — none of it is arranged for the purpose, so the practical questions are access, parking and where an elderly relative can stand. The thekua and the fruit are the easy part.
What we arrange
- A walkable stretch of water with parking, checked in advance
- Thekua made to order, and the sugarcane, which needs ordering
- Bamboo soop and daura, not sold in Dutch shops
- Sunset and sunrise times for the exact spot, in writing
- Somewhere warm within a few minutes of the bank
Sourcing takes about 21 days for this one, so tell us by .
